Hannah was one of Elkanah’s wives. Though loved by him, she lived with the pain of not being able to bear children, while Peninnah, the other wife, constantly provoked her. Every year, Hannah went up to the temple in Shiloh. There, in deep anguish, she prayed to the Lord and made a vow: if He gave her a son, she would dedicate him to Him all the days of his life.
Her prayer was so intense that the priest Eli thought she was drunk. But Hannah explained that she was pouring out her soul before God. Eli blessed her, and shortly after, Hannah conceived Samuel.
When the child was weaned, Hannah took him to the temple and gave him to the Lord, fulfilling her vow. Then she lifted up a song of praise that reveals her grateful heart and her spiritual vision.
